CHAPTER 14

Sakai was relieved to see that the river was indeed shallow. It was barely more than a stream. As Martin Fry had told them, they could see Mount Dragoon in the valley ahead. They could only partially see it due to the number of trees in the way, but it was there, a giant rock surrounded by wilderness.

The Staff Sergeant watched the river, studying each shoreline carefully. Any source of water served as a place for animals to drink. The shore was covered in a blanket of stones, making it difficult to spot any footprints. The river itself was only about twenty feet wide. The stream splashed against several large rocks spaced throughout. He judged that it was around three feet at its deepest point.

There was a tranquility to this area. It was full of nature. There were birds flying overhead. They could see a few monkeys hanging from a low branch across the river. For a moment, they felt like they were in a nature park. Of course, that feeling went away when they remembered they were trying to avoid encountering real life dinosaurs.

“Come on, ladies. You’re not afraid of a little water are ya?” Sakai said.

“As long as there’s no crocodiles in it,” Ward said.

“No,” Janet chuckled. “We haven’t discovered any crocodiles or alligators in this region.”

“Didn’t find any dinosaurs either,” Ward replied. He was the first in the water. The water was refreshingly cool, even though he hated the sensation of wet clothes. Oh well—in this heat, he’d dry off in minutes. It wasn’t like he wasn’t already damp from the excessive sweating. He continued on for a few meters, passing one of the big rocks. The water was past his knees now. Sakai went in next, followed by Hood, Cutler, Vance, surrounding the civilians.

“Watch those trees up ahead,” Sakai reminded them. “Don’t let your guard down.” Calloway, Hood, and Morgan stepped into the water behind the civilians. It was almost as clear as glass. Gravel swirled like little grey ghosts being carried away by the current.

Morgan stumbled as her foot hit something hard. She nearly fell forward but was caught by Calloway.

“Careful there,” he said. Morgan found her footing and continued on. She realized that some of the ‘small’ rocks under the water were actually the tops of large buried ones.

She passed by one of the big ones, momentarily watching the water breaking apart as it passed by it. They were halfway across the river. Ward and Sakai were coming up on the opposite shoreline, just ten feet ahead.

Calloway walked on the left-hand side. As he approached the shore he passed by a series of large rocks. The first had a jagged shape with a dark grey color. The next was more rounded in shape, but with a grey color. Because of this, he couldn’t help but notice the next one. Its brown color and crooked shape made it catch his eye. Then he realized its texture—it was more leathery than gravelly.

Right then, the ‘rock’ stood up, untucking its arms and legs.
